Uber Technologies (UBER) settled a federal sexual assault case less than 48 hours after jury selection in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas, the company said Friday, plaintiffs' counsel said Friday.
The case alleged Uber's background check failures allowed a driver onto its platform, leading to a 2020 sexual assault. The driver was convicted in 2022 and sentenced to 11 years.
Uber stipulated during jury selection that it would not contest that the assault occurred, according to plaintiffs' counsel. The settlement terms are confidential, the statement said.
The case was the third federal bellwether trial in the multidistrict litigation involving passenger sexual assault claims against Uber, plaintiffs' counsel said.
About 5,000 survivors remain in the litigation and are still seeking resolution, plaintiffs' counsel said.
