Energy stocks rose late Tuesday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) each adding 0.7%.
The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index fell 1%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities Index gained 1.8%.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 0.2% to $89.64 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent advanced 0.5% to $100.84 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures climbed 2% to $3.13 per 1 million BTU.
In corporate news, Exxon Mobil's (XOM) oil and gas prospects are advancing off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago, the Financial Times reported, citing an interview with John Ardill, the company's head of global exploration. Exxon shares rose 0.6%.
