Most major Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers recorded increases in production and deliveries in September, despite cost pressures from Beijing's additional lithium-ion battery tax.

BYD's (HKG:1211, SHE:002594) production grew to 463,864 units from 405,554 units a year earlier, while sales increased to 463,561 units from 396,270 units in the prior-year period, according to a Thursday disclosure to the Hong Kong bourse.

Zhejiang Leapmotor's (HKG:9863) global deliveries rose 59% year over year to 105,656 vehicles, the third straight month the company logged deliveries of more than 100,000. Third-quarter deliveries grew 78% year over year to a record 310,052 vehicles, CnEVPost reported separately.

XPeng (HKG:9868) deliveries increased 5% month over month to 41,256 vehicles, with third-quarter deliveries jumping 15% to 118,390 units.

Nio's (HKG:9866, SGX:NIO) deliveries jumped 7.7% year over year to 37,408 units, while third-quarter deliveries jumped 25% to 109,178 units.

Geely Automobile's (HKG:0175) total sales grew 7% to 292,168 in September from 273,125 units a year earlier. Sales of its Zeekr premium brand surged 104% to 37,216 from 18,257 units.

Xiaomi's (HKG:1810) auto deliveries topped 40,000 in September, the highest so far this year, following the launch of its Sky Nomad series.

Conversely, Li Auto (HKG:2015) posted a 6.3% year-over-year decline in deliveries to 31,817 units. Its cumulative deliveries reached 1.8 million.

The broader industry growth comes as China resumed collecting a 2% consumption tax on lithium-ion batteries starting in September, ending a decade-long exemption. The tax will increase to 4% in 12 months, with battery makers largely choosing to pass the added costs to automakers.
