The Federal Trade Commission is opening an investigation into Amazon-backed (AMZN) Anthropic, Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI and other AI companies to determine potential dangers their products pose to consumers, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

The commission plans to issue formal demands for information and compel testimony from executives at large AI firms and the research group METR, the report said.

The FTC, Anthropic and OpenAI didn't immediately reply to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
