Qantas Airways (ASX:QAN) and Virgin Australia Holdings (ASX:VGN) have campaigned for the addition of a new fuel levy to airfares to offset the cost of their participation in the Australian government's green energy scheme, The Australian reported Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.

The government has ordered for biofuels to be mixed into Australian fuel supplies, but the relatively environmentally friendly alternative can cost up to five times higher than traditional jet fuel, according to the report.

The two airlines did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
