OpenAI decided not to release its GPT-6.1 Astra model after determining that it did not meet the company's safety and alignment standards, the company said Monday, in an emailed statement to MT Newswires.

Saachi Jain, head of safety systems at OpenAI, said Astra improved on areas including model laziness but did not meet the bar for staying within scope and authorization or communicating clearly with users about the work it had performed.

OpenAI said the model did not perform as well as Astra GPT-6 on alignment evaluations. The company said other new models are coming soon that meet its safety standards and that there will be other Astra models in the future.
