Nvidia's (NVDA) new AI chip could gain access to Chinese market as Beijing considers allowing some domestic companies to buy the RTX Pro 5500, The Information reported over the weekend, citing two unnamed people familiar with the matter.

According to the report, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked companies including Alibaba Group (BABA) and TikTok owner ByteDance to report on their plans to buy Nvidia's latest chips, which were released this month. Nvidia's advanced AI chips have faced heavy U.S. export restrictions and limits on purchases by the Chinese government.

The Ministry has told some Chinese companies it intends to approve the purchases, however, the timeline and criteria for approval remain unclear, the media outlet added.

Nvidia, Alibaba and ByteDance did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology could not be reached.
