September 29, U.S. stocks closed lower after a broad technology retreat pressured all three major averages. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.67%, the S&P 500 dropped 0.77% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 0.92% as investors digested surging Treasury yields and cautious guidance from several high-growth companies.

Chipmakers led the decliners. Advanced Micro Devices fell 3.61% and Intel lost 5.67% after a brokerage downgraded the sector on demand concerns, while Micron Technology skidded 2.61% despite posting solid quarterly revenue. Tesla retreated 3.94% as analysts flagged rising EV competition. Meta Platforms slid 4.79% and Amazon.com declined 1.41%, extending this week’s mega-cap pullback. MongoDB tumbled 18.46% following a disappointing outlook, and Arm Holdings sank 8.70% as post-IPO volatility persisted. Bucking the trend, Nvidia added 1.68% on reports of robust AI chip orders.

Smaller tech and China ADRs showed extreme swings. Direxion’s SOXS bear semiconductor ETF jumped 6.17%, while its bullish counterpart SOXL fell 6.05%. Viomi Technology soared 17.78% and Kandi Technologies surged 39.46% on thin volumes, whereas VNET Group fell 9.94% and Cango rallied 19.90%. NetEase advanced 4.88% on strong game launch expectations, but XPeng slipped 1.68% amid fresh price-cut speculation.
