At the entrance of Terminal C at Beijing Daxing Airport, Yuan Yutong, a senior student preparing to travel to Chengdu, was drawn to a plush toy in the Sanrio pop-up store and immediately rushed inside.
According to statistics, Daxing Airport currently has 529 shops, ranking second among all single airports nationwide, surpassing the number of shops in many large shopping malls.
A recent visit by reporters found that with passenger traffic rising during the National Day holiday, airport shops are also experiencing a consumption boom.
The Sanrio pop-up store is located right beside the passenger walkway. Its open layout allows people to see at a glance the merchandise featuring characters like Kuromi, My Melody, and Cinnamoroll on the shelves. The most prominent spot in the store is reserved for the Beijing-exclusive Tanghulu series.
"These plush dolls and keychains with tanghulu elements are all 'hot items.' I'll grab one while they're still in stock." Yuan Yutong said, unable to put it down after picking it up.
Besides the tanghulu series, travel accessories such as passport holders and canvas bags are also selling well.
"This passport holder is an airport exclusive—you can't find it at any Sanrio store in downtown shopping districts," said Ms. Hu, who was preparing to fly to Shanghai while checking out. "I'll buy a few more to give to friends as souvenirs."
At the start of the National Day holiday, foot traffic in the pop-up store increased noticeably, with queues forming at the checkout counter at one point.
The Song Dynasty Fragrance pop-up store, located in the core area of Daxing Airport, is also a recently opened shop. Its wooden-style storefront stands out in the airport hall, and Chinese elements such as calligraphy are incorporated into the product designs, making it very eye-catching.
Reporters noted that prices at the airport pop-up stores are consistent with those at downtown locations, which encourages many travelers to pick up a piece of "Oriental fragrance" while waiting for their flights.
"The pop-up stores at Daxing Airport are all very distinctive. Whether it's local specialties or cultural creative products, they make you want to buy something," traveler Ms. Qin told reporters. She arrived 3 hours early this time specifically to browse the diverse airport shops.
"Many pop-up stores also have gift-with-purchase promotions, so you get extra little gifts when you buy things. The overall shopping experience is quite good," she said.
Inside the Daxing Airport terminal, a new 189-square-meter dining area has recently been opened outside three restaurants: Chuange Fish Dumplings, Old Zhang Beef Noodles, and Xiangshui Yao.
The three restaurants are adjacent to each other, so travelers don't have to squeeze inside waiting for tables—they can sit down beside the walkway and enjoy a hot meal.
"With more and more customers, we thought about whether we could expand on the original storefront and open a new dining area outside," said Yang Zhenting, the manager operating these three shops. He said the area was built with remarkable efficiency from communication to completion, which not only increased the restaurants' revenue but also made things more convenient for travelers.
Yang Zhenting introduced that judging from last year's National Day holiday traffic, the restaurants served about 800 to 1,000 customers per day on average, with daily revenue reaching up to 70,000 yuan at peak.
"We expect both customer traffic and revenue to grow further during this year's National Day holiday," Yang Zhenting said.
To cope with the peak passenger flow, these three restaurants have also made advance preparations, arranging inventory at more than 1.5 times the usual amount to ensure normal operations at the airport locations.
Not far from the international arrivals exit, the newly added Starbucks seating area is occupied by many customers. Travelers who have just arrived in Beijing often wait here for friends.
"In the past, after coming out of the international exit, you had to walk several hundred meters to a Starbucks to buy a coffee. Now there's one right at the exit, which is much more convenient," one traveler remarked.
