Fresh Catch Arrival: First Wave of Seafood Hits Songyang Markets

With the conclusion of the four-and-a-half-month summer fishing moratorium in the East China Sea, a fresh wave of "lively" seafood, including hairtail, large and small yellow croaker, and pomfret, is gradually making its way back to dining tables in Songyang.

At the aquatic and seafood section of a local supermarket, ice tables are neatly lined with hairtail, pomfret, and Bombay duck, drawing many shoppers to browse and make their selections.

"I heard the first batch of seafood after the fishing ban had arrived, so I came specifically to buy some Bombay duck. My whole family loves it," said Ms. Chen, who was carefully picking out the fish.

As early as August, during the initial phase of the fishing season, plump swimming crabs had already made a debut on Songyang tables, offering an early taste of autumn seafood delights.

Now, with the full-scale reopening of fishing, a large influx of deep-sea bottom fish, such as small yellow croaker, hairtail, and squid, has flooded the market. The head of the supermarket's aquatic section noted that since the full reopening of the East China Sea fishery, the variety of seafood has expanded, and prices have softened compared to earlier periods.

Bombay duck is currently priced at 9.8 yuan per jin, while deep-sea small yellow croaker ranges between 35 and 40 yuan per jin, fueling strong enthusiasm among consumers.

"For those seeking even better value, it's worth waiting a bit longer—prices are expected to drop further after October," the supervisor added.

As more fishing boats return to port in the coming days, the variety and volume of East China Sea seafood available in Songyang markets are set to continue growing.
