The 15th China Shengzhong Lake Fishing Competition officially commenced on September 22, drawing 200 teams and 800 anglers from across the country to the shores of Shengzhong Lake to showcase their angling skills and vie for a total prize purse of 600,000 yuan.
As dawn broke over the lake, a thin mist shrouded the water while the broad surface sparkled with ripples. Teams arrived early to secure their designated fishing spots, bringing the shoreline to life with bustling activity. Team members divided their duties efficiently—some rapidly assembled rods and meticulously checked lines and hooks, while others crouched by the water's edge mixing bait and repeatedly comparing flavor profiles. Still others kept their eyes fixed on the water, observing conditions and fish activity while exchanging insights. When the starting signal rang out, fishing rods traced elegant arcs through the air, with baited lines plunging into the lake. Contestants settled into their positions, launching what would become a three-day test of angling skill.
"We all love Shengzhong Lake, so we formed a team to compete this time—it's about testing our skills and enjoying the scenery," said Tian Guojin, an athlete from the Shanxi Kubao Silver Carp and Bighead Carp Team. "The three-day staged matches maintain a balanced rhythm, truly testing endurance, patience, and especially team coordination. We're hoping for a good haul."
The competition features two main categories: hand rods and casting rods. The hand rod section is staged in the Pengjiagou and Laolin ditch waters, while the casting rod section spans from the dam to the Sujiazui area. Running from September 22 to 24, the event totals 28 hours of competition time, with the champion teams in each category set to take home 200,000 yuan respectively.
Described as a highly influential natural-water angling brand event in China, the competition uses fishing as a medium to foster camaraderie through sport. During the matches, participants not only battle against fish behavior but also contend with challenging conditions brought by weather and shifting water levels on the lake. A representative from the Nanbu County Education and Sports Bureau stated the event leverages Shengzhong Lake's exceptional water resources to showcase the reservoir area's outstanding ecological foundation, advance the deep integration of sports competition with cultural tourism and leisure, and continue polishing the distinctive brand of "China's Shengzhong Lake, the World's Fishing City."
