Samsung Electronics of South Korea said on Tuesday that the number of customers for its foundry business could grow by roughly four times by 2029 compared to 2017.

Noh Mi-jung, senior vice president of Samsung's foundry division, said at the "Korea Premium Week 2026" event: "Since the foundry business was established as an independent unit in 2017, the number of customers has grown by about three times."

"We expect the number of customers to grow by about four times by 2029," she said.

Samsung's foundry business plans to diversify away from its current focus on mobile products toward artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).

In 2017, HPC accounted for only 5% of its total foundry business, but that share has now risen to 28%. The company expects that proportion to reach 66% by 2029.

"We expect that by 2029, HPC customers will make up more than half of our customer base, while HPC will also account for the vast majority of our sales," the executive said.

Samsung plans to begin mass production of its third-generation 2-nanometer process in 2028, followed by mass production of its 1.4-nanometer process in 2029.

The South Korean tech giant plans to start initial operations at the first wafer fab within its semiconductor campus in Taylor, Texas, in the United States before the end of this year.

In addition, the company plans to begin construction of a second wafer fab within the year, with the goal of achieving mass production by 2030.
