Japan's Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday that it will set up a study group next month to examine whether blockchain technology should be used to enable Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) to be traded "on-chain."
A senior official from the Ministry of Finance said at a briefing that the study group will assess the potential benefits, costs, and market impact of moving JGB-related transactions onto the blockchain.
The official noted that on-chain capabilities, including faster settlement speeds, are expected to bring a range of conveniences, such as allowing government bonds to be used instantly as collateral in repo transactions.
