The 500-mu corn yield-per-unit-area improvement demonstration project in Housuo Town, Fuyuan County, recently completed on-site yield measurement. The average corn yield in the project area reached 898 kilograms per mu, an increase of 58.14% over last year's countywide average yield per mu, exceeding the preset target and marking a substantive breakthrough in Fuyuan County's large-scale and standardized corn yield improvement work.
The yield measurement area was located in Tuguanzhuang Village, Laoniuchang Village Committee, Housuo Town, and is a key implementation area for the 2026 central government large-scale oil and grain crop yield improvement initiative. At the measurement site, a professional yield measurement team from the county seed management station strictly followed standardized procedures, carrying out a series of regulated operations including on-site inspection of crop growth, measurement of planting specifications, counting of panicles per mu, sampling for seed examination, threshing and weighing, and moisture testing. Data checks were strictly controlled throughout the process to ensure that the yield measurement results were authentic, objective, and precisely traceable.
Yin Xiangao, a senior agronomist at the Fuyuan County Seed Management Station, said at the measurement site: "This year we organized and implemented the central government large-scale oil and grain crop yield improvement project. The total project area is 500 mu, and we mainly did two things: first, selecting good seeds, and second, carrying out technology extension. In seed selection, we used the method of selecting seeds by observing the crops, chose four varieties from more than 200 varieties, and organized their distribution to farmers. In technology extension, we worked on expanding row spacing and narrowing plant spacing, increasing planting density to ensure higher yields."
Relying on the technical path of "improved varieties empowered plus supporting improved methods," the demonstration project mainly promoted four varieties, Shengyu 386, Guoao 312, Limin No. 1, and Xuanrui No. 1, which are tolerant to dense planting, resistant to lodging, and stable and high-yielding. It also supported two planting models, single-row planting and wide-narrow row planting, with a sowing density of more than 4,200 plants per mu. At the same time, integrated technologies were implemented, including timely early sowing, ditching to reduce waterlogging, scientific water and fertilizer management, chemical regulation to prevent lodging, pest and disease control, one-spray multiple-promotion, and full-ripening harvest, providing solid technical support for increasing yield per unit area.
"This year I planted 5 mu of corn, and more than 3 mu received free seeds, fertilizer, and other preferential agricultural subsidies. In addition, the varieties selected were suitable for the local soil and water conditions, and technical guidance was also available, so this year's harvest far exceeded previous years," said Li Hexian, a grower in Tuguanzhuang Village. Tangible policy support and technical assistance have given farmers greater confidence in a bumper harvest.
This yield measurement not only tested the production results of the demonstration fields, but also fully verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the integrated cultivation model combining "improved varieties, improved methods, improved fields, improved machinery, and improved management." It allowed standardized high-yield planting technology to truly move from planning documents to real conditions in the fields.
Next, the Fuyuan County Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau will comprehensively summarize the variety performance and planting experience of this demonstration project, organize and form a replicable and promotable standardized model for high-yield cultivation, and promote it across the county's 430,000 mu corn planting area. At the same time, it will continue to strengthen the downward extension of agricultural technical services and the driving role of demonstrations, promote the upgrading of corn yield improvement from point demonstrations to full-region scale expansion, continue to consolidate the foundation of food security, and help farmers achieve stable production and increased income as well as improved quality and efficiency in agriculture.
