The quarterly rebalancing of the Nasdaq 100 Index is set to take effect before Monday's U.S. market open, with the most notable shift being SpaceX's (SPCX.US) weight surging from roughly 1.28% to 2.82%. The rocket, satellite, and AI enterprise helmed by Elon Musk now boasts a market capitalization exceeding $2 trillion.
When SpaceX was first added to the Nasdaq 100 in July, its index weight remained modest due to a substantial portion of its shares being locked up, which limited the number of shares available for public trading. With the lock-up period now concluded, the company's free-float share count and its corresponding index weighting are anticipated to rise, prompting index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking the benchmark to acquire additional shares.
Currently, more than 200 investment products worldwide track the Nasdaq 100, overseeing a combined asset base of over $800 billion. On the same day, the S&P Dow Jones Indices quarterly rebalancing will also take effect, with the S&P 100 adding Palo Alto Networks, Arista Networks, SanDisk, and Dell, while the S&P 500 will welcome Everpure, Bloom Energy, and Illumina. This adjustment is a routine portfolio shift, and the rebalancing on the effective date is likely to trigger volume and price fluctuations in related tech stocks, with names like Arista and Palo Alto expected to see passive inflows.
