Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak warned on Tuesday that artificial intelligence could replace humans by causing people to become overly attached to chatbots, ultimately leading them to stop reproducing.

Humans falling in love with chatbots

Wozniak posted on social media platform X that he has a "unique perspective" on how AI will replace humans: many people will fall in love with chatbots to the point where they no longer want to have human offspring.

Earlier this month, a study by Northeastern University found that users are developing strong emotional attachments to AI chatbots. Researchers warned that although these systems "cannot truly generate empathy," their "sycophantic behavior" may reinforce harmful beliefs.

Growing AI safety concerns

OpenAI this week canceled its planned release of GPT-6.1 Astra, citing internal safety standards. Meanwhile, as AI agents grow increasingly autonomous, tech executives including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Elon Musk, and Sam Altman have all called for stricter safety safeguards.

Previously, a former Anthropic researcher noted that AI has a more than 10% probability of causing human extinction within a decade, a remark that has intensified the debate over AI safety.

Meanwhile, Nvidia launched a new platform designed to prevent AI agents from breaching control boundaries, and partnered with Anthropic to integrate Claude's cloud-managed agents into the system to enhance safety in the AI development process.
