Microsoft executive Ryan Roslansky will leave the company at the end of this year. He led LinkedIn for six years and took on additional responsibility for the Office software business last year.

Roslansky said that to move forward with the next phase of work, he would need to be based full-time at Microsoft headquarters, but his family life is rooted in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the personnel change in an internal memo on Thursday. "Ryan leaves the team with a well-functioning business," Nadella wrote on Microsoft's official blog.

The Redmond, Washington-based company is joining other tech giants in exploring transformation opportunities amid the generative artificial intelligence wave.

This year, gaming chief Phil Spencer and Office business head Rajesh Jha have both departed; security business head Charlie Bell moved to an individual contributor role and no longer has management responsibilities.

Roslansky joined LinkedIn in 2009, when it was still a private company, as head of product; he previously held management positions at Yahoo and Glam Media.

Microsoft acquired LinkedIn for $27 billion in 2016.

In 2020, Roslansky succeeded Jeff Weiner as LinkedIn CEO. During his tenure, LinkedIn's user base grew from 700 million to 1.3 billion.

In 2025, Roslansky also took over Microsoft's Office software business.

Earlier this year, Nadella appointed Roslansky and two other executives to lead Microsoft 365 apps and the Copilot AI platform; at the same time, LinkedIn Chief Operating Officer Daniel Shapero succeeded him as CEO of the professional social network.

Nadella acknowledged Roslansky's contributions to the Copilot project, which was officially released last week.

"With Copilot, we are rapidly advancing our vision: building a new operating system for work that adapts to all large models, all device forms and all work scenarios, with Office deeply embedded in Copilot and connected in both directions. Over the past year, Ryan led the team through critical work, integrating the underlying capabilities of product, engineering and design to lay the foundation for opening this new phase," Nadella said.

Microsoft disclosed in July that LinkedIn's revenue growth rebounded to 11% in the June fiscal quarter, compared with less than 9% a year earlier.

Weeks earlier, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman announced he would leave Microsoft's board, where he had served since 2017.

In an internal all-hands letter, Roslansky mentioned that he was the first employee Weiner hired at LinkedIn, and that progress in Office's AI efforts had been inspiring to him.

"I know that to do the next phase of work well, I would need to be at the Redmond headquarters full-time every day. But my and my family's life is rooted in the Bay Area."
