DoorDash has struck partnerships with a range of retailers in recent months, including Anthropologie, Timberland and Macy's.

Quick Overview

DoorDash has added apparel, footwear and other product categories to its app through new partnerships with brands such as Timberland, Vans and Macy's.

DoorDash is betting that U.S. consumers want more than just a takeout dinner delivered.

An Anthropologie dress, a North Face puffer vest, a Sephora face cream. On Wednesday, the app originally known for delivering pizza, lo mein and other restaurant meals announced it would list more clothing, footwear and other goods on its platform.

In addition to Anthropologie, Macy's and the North Face, the newly added brand partners include Timberland and Vans.

In recent months, delivery platforms such as DoorDash and Uber Eats have rolled out a string of retail partnerships. Competition in the industry has intensified further, with these platforms not only battling each other but also taking on Amazon and Walmart to meet Americans' growing demand for instant shopping.

"Five years ago, five- to seven-day shipping was acceptable, but today it no longer works," said Fuad Hannon, DoorDash's vice president of new business verticals.

Companies like Amazon and Walmart have been steadily speeding up their delivery services in recent years, raising consumers' expectations. "Fast, mostly free delivery has now become the baseline for all retail categories, not the aspiration," said Mark Iampieri, who leads the logistics and transportation practice at consulting firm AlixPartners. He noted that retailers that fail to meet such delivery standards risk losing customer loyalty.

To keep up with market demand, many department stores and specialty apparel retailers are seeking outside partners to handle product delivery in order to boost revenue. "We want to reach a broader and different customer base through this," said Max Magni, Macy's chief customer and digital officer. Under its agreement with DoorDash, about 360 Macy's stores will offer two-hour express delivery this fall, out of roughly 430 Macy's locations in total. Magni said Macy's had already indirectly integrated DoorDash delivery into its own website and app over the past few years, and now consumers can shop Macy's products directly on the DoorDash platform, while Macy's will also make express delivery more prominent on its own site.

San Francisco-based DoorDash spent years positioning itself primarily as a food delivery service, competing with Grubhub and Uber. Hannon said retailers previously were unsure whether consumers would be willing to buy clothing, hardware and groceries on a food delivery app. But now more and more consumers want their goods within hours and are willing to pay extra for speed. In a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted by AlixPartners last year, only 13% of respondents said they were unwilling to pay a premium for same-day delivery, down from 30% the year before.

Earlier this year, DoorDash struck partnerships with Barnes & Noble, Gap and Kohl's. A company spokeswoman said that as of June, about 30 million items were being sold directly on the platform, up from just 9 million a year earlier.

Uber has also rolled out several retail partnerships this year. Warehouse club Costco said this month that it would use DoorDash and Uber to expand same-day delivery across the United States, after previously partnering with Instacart for delivery. Costco CEO Ron Vachris said on a recent earnings call that younger consumers "still visit stores frequently, but increasingly use online instant delivery as a supplementary shopping channel."
