International paleontology journal Journal of Paleontology recently published findings from a joint Chinese-foreign research team that discovered giant horseshoe crab trace fossils in Anhui strata dating back over 240 million years. Researchers estimate that the trace-making organism was a large horseshoe crab with a body width of up to 45 centimeters, an estimated total length exceeding 70 centimeters, and possibly reaching 95 centimeters in the largest specimens, placing it among the largest known Triassic horseshoe crabs.
